Bands having songs that were never released on an proper album is normal, but this is a GREAT song, hardly a throwaway, and one they were playing live. Why was it left off the Final Countdown album, and once they realized it was awesome enough to play live, why not put it on Out of This World? After all, they remade Open Your Heart for that album.
Also, was the song only played live on the Final Countdown tour or have they busted it out since then?

Welcome to the forum! The song was only played on the Final Countdown tour in 1987 with Kee Marcello. It's a shame they didn't bring the song back on the setlist for the TFC 30th Anniversary Tour in 2016. It would have been great to finally hear it live with John Norum.

Oh, so Norum played on the studio version? I can usually tell the difference in their lead styles but for some reason I always associated that song with Kee. Probably because I grew up watching that live VHS like 100 times.

You can see the similarity if you compare the On Broken Wings solo to the live version of Dance the Night Away in Solna (1986). They are very similar.

A very successful song. Millions of people actually own the 7inch vinyl.

Well then while I'm here, maybe one of you can tell me whether those solos on the Don Dokken Up From the Ashes album are Norum solos mostly, or Billy White solos. Because the guitar playing on that album is some of the best I've ever heard.

IIRC, and maybe you can clarify things a bit better for me here, Stein, I think that On Broken Wings was intended to be included on the TFC album in the first place, but might have been dropped due to timing concerns, in respect to the length of the album.
However, Rock Candy did include OBW on it's TFC remaster release last year, meaning it only took 33 years for that to happen. XD

"When Some Nights" White 4. "Forever" Norum ( the final countdown lick in the solo ) 5. "Living a Lie" Norum 6. "When Love Finds a Fool" White 7. "Give It Up" Norum 8. "Mirror Mirror" White/Norum 9. "Stay" White 10. "Down in Flames" I would say norum/white 11. "The Hunger" I would say first white and then norum

In an interview Joey did with the Swedish magazine Okej shortly before the recording of the TFC album, he said this: "I wrote all the songs except for one, 'Carrie', which Mic and I wrote. 12 songs," Joey continues. "Everyone of them are really good. 10 of them will go on the album, the last two will become B-sides for singles. I don't know which ones, to me they are all good." The 12 songs were the 10 songs that ended up on the album, as well as "On Broken Wings" and "Where Men Won't Dare". Maybe they were planning at one point to put "On Broken Wings" on the album, but for whatever reason they decided to use it as a B-side. As for "Where Men Won't Dare", that song was never finished, however it was included as bonus material on the DVD The Final Countdown Tour 1986: 20th Anniversary Edition.

Stein, "Where Men Won't Dare" was not intended as an instrumental, right? I also missed OBW on the 2016 tour.
