Over the years, I've found myself enjoying each of the post-reunion albums and noting that certain albums make me appreciate the contributions of individual members all the more.
Secret Society - to me, the unsung hero on this album is John Leven. His bass tone is perfect, the right blend of growl and warmth. It also seems to be mixed a little bit higher in the mix so you can hear what he's doing more closely. I love his performance on this one!
Last Look at Eden - I would say that John Norum and Mic Michaeli are the stars on this record. Anytime we get an extended Mic solo like on "No Stone Unturned" s a very welcome experience. And John's soulful playing on "Last Look at Eden" and "In My Time" is excellent as always.
War of Kings - Everyone's performance on this record is brilliant. This is really a case of "the whole is more than the sum of its parts." Joey Tempest is sounding godly on this album. His voice has never sounded stronger! Ian Haughland also shines thanks to the excellent production. They really did capture the live vibe on this record. Mic is the glue that keeps it all together which a great range of rock organ sounds, in the great tradition of Jon Lord. John Leven is obviously more active on the songwriting front and for that I'm very grateful. And have you ever heard any tastier licks from Norum?
