" After listening for years to the best metal bands - melodic hard rock in the world, I always come to the following conclusion : If the United States had to Dokken and Stryper , the Old Continent can be very proud of Europe , the great Swedish band led by Joey Tempest (vocals) and John Norum (guitar ) .
Wings of Tomorrow ( 1984 ) , the second studio album by Europe , is a testimony of the above stated . It is certainly the most successful of the band, from a strictly musical standpoint . Since the first album , simply titled Europe ( 1983 ) had laid the foundations of the group sound , but without becoming a strong proposal for a quality waxes and wanes .
But with Wings of Tomorrow , Tempest and company reach another level , much higher than the predecessor LP and all subsequent discography . Indeed , this has long beautiful compositions varied styles ranging from metal - hard rock virtuoso ( Scream of Anger , Wings of Tomorrow , Lyin 'Eyes , Dance the Night Away) , hard rock ( Stormwind, Wasted Time) and ballads of extraordinary quality (Open your Heart and Dreamer) .
The album starts with Stormwind, theme which presents all the features a melodic rocker should incorporate into their compositions: good vocals, impeccable vocal melody and instrumentation accompanying accurate. The beautiful guitar solo gives finishing. Scream of Anger notable for its fast pace especially with the distorted guitar riff courtesy of Norum. The only anthology. Special mention to Open Your Heart, ballads and Europe best known song from an early stage, in which the band still did not reach the levels of massive worldwide popularity. The version that was released years later further enhances this issue, video included. The song Wings of Tomorrow is another great demonstration of the quality of the band, the riff is heavy and Tempest again proves he can combine with his melodious voice hit as hard as recorded Norum . Outstanding song. Dreamer is another lesson in how to record for posterity ballads. Since its initial notes to the vocal melody piano and vocals beautifully crafted , through the magnificent guitar solo, nothing wasted. And like described above were not enough, the CD includes an instrumental composition entitled Aphasia , with John Norum the teacher demonstrates to the world their talent on guitar.
In summary, this Wings of Tomorrow is a neat and splendid work , which highlights the great voice of Tempest and Norum expertise , all complemented by a great accompaniment of drums, bass and keyboards. Maximum score gentlemen .
Anecdotally I commented that I liked that cover the bird spreading its wings ( on the back cover can be seen mounted humans other similar birds , initiating a massive space travel ) . I remember other interesting designs of covers of bands like Stryper ( To Hell with the Devil ) , Judas Priest ( Screaming for Vengeance ) , Iron Maiden ( Somewhere in Time) , among others. "
