Here an interview to Mic made by fans. The initiative came from the facebook page "Europe Through the Years", a group of U.S. fans who do a fantastic job there, sharing wonderful photos of the band and make interesting initiatives like this. A few years ago they also got that Ian answered some questions from fans.
In this case ETTYears proposed to the fans send questions them via facebook, they were going to send to the managers so that any member of the band could answer.
It's great that they got to Mic, he is kind.
I participated in sending questions, the question of Rush fans is mine I sent it thinking about the possibility that Joey could be who answer the questions, and something that I generated a lot of curiosity, at various times I read that Joey talks about the relationship of band Rush with their fans, is something that he likes, so I would like to know WHY ?.. but it was a pleasure to read the Mic answer.
30th Anniversary Interview with Mic Michaeli
1. Have you already started to write the next album and what kind of influences do you see coming through if you have? WE HAVE SOME RIFFS BUT NOTHING THAT WOULD COUNT AS A COMPLETE SONG YET. WHERE THE SONGS WILL TAKE US THIS TIME, NOBODY KNOWS AT THIS POINT.
2. With your 30th Anniversary performance can we look forward to another DVD for commemoration? WE WILL RELEASE A DVD FROM OUR 30th ANNIVERSARY SHOW AT SWEDEN ROCK FESTIVAL
3. Europe has many fans in many countries who would love for you to tour in their part of the world. We understand there are sometimes things that may prevent this from happening such as time, not being able to get the promoters or finances may not permit. Keeping these things in mind, would you ever consider doing another Live Internet Broadcast like you did in Nalen and maybe a Q & A via your website or some other form of social media? I'M SURE WE WILL AT SOME POINT
4. Out of the past nine albums which one would you say defines the band the best? THATS HARD TO SAY... THEY ALL REPRESENT A CERTAIN TIME. BAG OF BONES WOULD BE THE CHOISE DEFINING THE BAND TODAY BUT IN A COUPLE OF YEARS MY ANSWER WOULD PROBABLY BE DIFFERENT
5. Have you ever thought of making a cover of one of your songs in Spanish or any other language, the way other artists have? I DONT THINK WE HAVE, NO
6. Would you ever play Prisoners In Paradise (the song) live again? CHECK THE 30th ANNIVERSARY DVD FROM SWEDEN ROCK
7. Does the group as a whole or individually support any charitable or non-profit organization? AS A BAND WE HAVE DONE SO ON OCCASIONS. PERSONALLY I SUPPORT GREENPEACE AND AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL
8. You have a fantastic version of Wish You Were Here by Pink Floyd.....if we are talking classics from other bands what song would you like to cover that you haven't already? WE HAVE NOT DISCUSSED THAT BUT PROBABLY SOMETHING WE CAN REARRANGE TO MAKE IT SOUND DIFFERENT FROM THE ORIGINAL
9. Europe has had many great collaborations with other big artists of the Rock World. Joe Bonamassa, The mini tour with Whitesnake and Def Leppard, as well as with the well known producer Kevin Shirley. Are there any artists or producers that you would like to work with in the future that you haven't already gotten to work with and is there a possibility of one or two showing up on the new album?THERE ARE MANY ARTISTS AND PRODUCERS THAT WE WOULD LIKE TO WORK WITH IN ONE WAY OR ANOTHER BUT WE HAVEN'T TALKED ABOUT ANY SPECIAL ONES FOR THE UPCOMING ALBUM
10. In this, the second stage of Europe. With four great quality albums, great reviews of Last Look At Eden and even better ones with Bag Of Bones, Does the band feel pressured to try to out do the previous album with the next? NO, NOT THAT SORT OF PRESSURE. BUT WE ALWAYS TRY TO OUTDO OUR PREVIOUS ALBUMS REGARDLESS OF WHAT THE CRITICS SAY.
11. Your last album "Bag of Bones" has had great reviews and has entered many lists of best albums of 2012. Specifically PLANET ROCK (well known radio station in UK) listed "Bag of Bones" as the 10th best rock album of the year, saying that: " ...Bag Of Bones is a great big bluesy beast of a record, all major chord riffs and squealing solos with some dynamite hooks that are every bit as memorable as their past work…" What does this kind of recognition mean to the band? Do you follow the opinions of the press about your albums and concerts? IT'S NICE TO RECEIVE THIS KIND OF RECOGNITION IF IT COMES FROM SOMEONE YOU RESPECT. WE FOLLOW SOME OF IT BUT DON'T TAKE IT TOO SERIOUSLY, IT'S USUALLY JUST THE OPINION OF ONE SINGLE PERSON
12. In November EUROPE will be playing in DUBAI. It is a new audience, unknown to the band. How will you prepare for this concert? Are you going to play more classics or more recent songs ? TRUE, BUT I THINK THE SHOW WILL BE SIMILAR TO WHAT WE HAVE BEEN DOING DURING THIS SUMMERS FESTIVALS. WE WILL INCLUDE SONGS FROM MOST OF OUR ALBUMS.
13. Joey once said in an interview... " Bands like Rush changed their style so many times and their fans are still there. They are there in droves. There are so many because they want a band to take them on a journey. We're going on a journey, and I hope the fans will follow us..." Do you feel that your fans have been with you through your 30 year journey? SOME DEFINITELY HAVE, AND WE SALUTE THEM! SOME HAVE DISCOVERED EUROPE LATER ON, AND WE WELCOME EACH AND EVERYONE TO JOIN THE TRIP WE'RE ON IN OUR OWN MUSICAL UNIVERSE
14. In your perspective, What needs to be done to get more of your music released in the US and what more can the fans do to help?I KNOW SOME OF YOU GUYS ARE ALREADY WORKING HARD ON IT, TRYING TO CONVINCE RADIO STATIONS TO PLAY EUROPE'S MUSIC ETC. WE ARE CONSTANTLY LOOKING FOR WAYS TO TOUR THE US AGAIN. IT'S ALWAYS A MATTER OF SUPPLY AND DEMAND AND WORD OF MOUTH HAS BEEN VERY IMPORTANT FOR THE BAND OVER THE LAST 10 YEARS. SO GET SOME MORE PEOPLE TO JOIN AND KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK. WE ARE PROUD TO HAVE OUR OWN STREET TEAM WORKING FOR US OVER THERE!
15. Through the span of your 30 years, can you tell us some of the high points and low points of your musical career? HIGHS:* EUROPE WINNING FIRST PRIZE IN SWEDISH ROCK CONTEST AND RECORDING DEBUT ALBUM* MIC JOINING THE BAND * TFC SONG AND ALBUM HITTING THE WORLD.* GETTING BACK TOGETHER IN 2003 AND REALIZING IT'S MORE FUN THAN EVER TO WORK TOGETHER AGAIN AND WE STILL HAVE AN AUDIENCE. LOWS: * WE ARE FORTUNATE TO HAVE VERY FEW LOW POINTS IN OUR CAREER AND I HONESTLY CANNOT THINK OF ANY EXCEPT THE FEW TIMES WE HAD TO CANCEL A SHOW. I THINK IT HAS HAPPENED TWICE, BOTH TIMES DUE TO EXTERNAL CIRCUMSTANCES.
16. If I was an up and coming young musician asking you for guidance, What advice would you give? GET INFLUENCED BY OTHERS BUT DON'T COPY. DONT LISTEN TOO MUCH TO WHAT OTHERS SAY. EXPERIMENT. FIND YOUR OWN THING, AND WHEN YOU HAVE: DO YOUR OWN THING!
17. What can fans expect from Europe in the future? Can you tell us something about the rest of this journey? WE DON'T EVEN KNOW WHAT TO EXPECT OURSELVES.
We would love to congratulate you again and say....The last 30 years with you has been some of the best!! With each progressive album we have all grown together. We cant wait to see what you shock us with in the next album!!We want to also say....Your time is valuable. To your families, To your friends, and to us!!! Thank you for sharing your experiences and insights with us yet again!!! It has been an exciting and incredible experience for us and we hope you have enjoyed it as well!!!
Thank you, EUROPE, for allowing us fans to go on this incredible journey with you. We hope the journey will continue for many years to come. And we are sure we speak for all fans when we say...Keep on walking that road and WE'LL follow!
THANK YOU! !
