I laughed a lot when I read Ian telling about people going on a sort of pilgrimage to Upplands Väsby... well, I must confess I did it too last year, on my very first minutes touching the blessed Swedish soil...LOL! I must tell you this "almost" in secret...sssshhhhhhh....
Just before visiting my Company's office in Kista Tower in Stockholm that day of May 2012, when my daughter and I went to Sweden for the Metalsvenskan Festival, we rented a car in Arlanda Airport and our first stop has been of course Upplands Väsby, since it's mid way from Arlanda to Stockholm.
I had been told the address of Joey's parents house from an Italian friend of mine...I put it into the GPS and there we went, on our first stop!
But upon the very last 200 meters to reach our "target", the road was blocked for the car and we needed to go by foot...
And of course we were quite nervous because in that little country everybody would have wondered who those two weird people were, walking there with their nose up in the air, looking for something...
Well, but the first issue was that I couldn't even extract the key from the car!!! So we couldn't leave the car there, without extracting the key first!
Meanwhile my boss started to call me on both my company and private phones...evidently it was a urgent thing even if I was on holiday... OMG! What a moment!
I struggled and sweated for at least 15 minutes (30°C on that day in Stockholm!) and I bet that lots of people were behind the curtains trying to understand who we were and what we were doing over there!
Then I decided to make the boss wait a bit and look at the user's manual in the car: all in Swedish and no pictures at all!!!
At the end I called AVIS and finally they said: "Oh is it a Hyundai? You have to press the key towards the inside and meanwhile turn it, after this it will come out..."
Finally it worked!
Then my daughter and I went out of the car, finding Joey's house and it was really impossible to get there pretending to have just a walk...you reach that house only if you really need to go visiting it!
I had been told that his mom is very nice anyway with possible visitors and eventually she allows them to visit also the private garden.
In any case Joey's parents were not outside the house, so we took only very quick pictures and then we went away!
Then I discovered that a colleague of mine in Kista Tower offices has got her sister still living in Upplands Väsby even today and they were both attending the same school as Ian and Joey... next time I go to Upplands Väsby, I must pay them a visit at home, LOL!
Do you recognize that bench? (I publish this picture with the name of the street only because Ian mentioned it already in his interview...)
