I'd like to begin a thread about all the qualities of our favorite guitarist in the world : John Norum. First of all, it's about his artist qualities, but feel free to underline his human qualities, too... (Message for Stein-Vidar : it seems to me we can't cut Norum qualities from Europe music. that's why I've put this thread in "Europe music" section. But you can move it to "miscellaneous" if you think it's better ! )

I like a lot this comment that Tony Conley wrote in his blog dedicated to Norum doing the review of Bag of Bones, I agree with every word and draw very well the John Norum's qualities. " ... John Norum has always been an exceptional guitarist. He always shined during his time with Europe (he was out of the band for six years in the late '80s/early '90s), and throughout a stellar solo career, but his playing has never been as brilliant, or shone as brightly as it does on this album. His lead playing is world class, and his riffing is exemplary. His tones are complex and varied, an obvious salute to Shirley's demand that the band start fresh with each tune and staying with each song until its completion. Every song has its own sound and the sound is always Norum leading the charge, with a new found sense of urgency and passion ... No doubt, Norum is a good guitar player. One of the best. He has an awesome technique He plays faster than his shadow ... All right. But many other virtuoso guitarists have the same qualities. So, what makes him so special ? IMO, what makes him very unique is THE SOUL ! A kind of spirituality. He puts soul in his notes, even when he's playing hard rock. Many people have noticed that Norum is playing every single note as if it was the very last one. So, he is present in every note he plays, focused on it. But there's something else... He gives a special energy to every piece : a mix between male authority and true sensibility (but never, never oversensitiveness !). That's even more obvious in slow songs. For instance "New Love In town", when suddenly the guitar appears after the keyboards, it's so powerful : something coming down from the sky...

The funny fact is that I really discovered how good Norum was when I heard him playing in the song "Right to Respect", from Joey Tempest solo album "A place to call home". Yes, incredible, but that's how it happened...

fiercely honest …
especially for to be a musician, a public figure that supposedly is bound to save face for being liked everyone, this is the best way for someone who wants sell something as in his case the music, but John breaks with all this … and I love it this part of him, is gratifying even when I disagree with what he says ...
