FN Interview - Europe singer Joey Tempest talks about the band's live performances and plans ahead of the "Rock Meets Classic" tour
"It's always a pleasure to play 'Final Countdown'"
If the Corona situation allows it, the crossover show "Rock meets Classic" will be on the road again in the south of the republic in spring. The show will stop in Würzburg on April 10th and in Nuremberg on April 2nd.
For the second time since 2016, Europe singer Joey Tempest will headline along with Dee Snider (Twisted Sister), Maggie Riley (Mike Oldfield among others), Ronnie Romero (Rainbow) and Mike Tramp (White Lion). As always, the singers will be accompanied by the Mat Sinner Band and the RMC Synphony Orchestra. In the run-up to the tour, Joey Tempest answered questions from the FN.
Mr. Tempest, this is the second time that you're taking part in "Rock meets Classic". What is the difference between the performances with your regular band Europe and the shows with a rock band plus orchestra?
Joey Tempest: It's a whole different soundscape all around you, almost like surround sound. Woodwind and brass instruments can be perfectly combined with a rock band.
Will you also listen to the performances of the other singers or will you concentrate on your own performance?
Tempest: I always try to follow the other performances as well. I'm a total music fan and of course you can always learn something from others.
Which songs will you present to the audience?
Tempest: The setlist will be similar to that of the 2016 tour performances. Maybe there will be two or three changes, after all we've since put out the Walk The Earth CD which also has strong songs to choose from.
"The Final Countdown" is one of the greatest rock songs of all time. Was this huge success more of a burden for Europe or an absolute stroke of luck?
Tempest: Of course we are very proud of this song. But that also goes for many other Europe songs. It is always an honor and a pleasure to play the song live. And the song actually seems to bring people together no matter where in the world we perform.
With War of Kings and Walk the Earth, Europe has delivered two powerful albums. Is the band planning another album or are you already working on it?
Tempest: We've started writing Europe 12. And as always, when we work on a new album, we embark on a whole new adventure.
Live performances have hardly been possible in the recent past due to Corona. Do you feverishly look forward to concerts or are you also a bit excited about whether everything will still work as it did before the forced break?
Tempest: If 2022 is going to be the big touring year we're hoping for, we're really prepared to return to the stage and want to do some special performances as well. We're really motivated to play in front of an audience again. It's just a part of us and we're really good at it. I'm good to go.
