"... As we wait for the band's new album Europe, their number 11 already, which they have just recorded at the legendary London studios Abbey Road and whose publication is expected next fall, their excellent guitarist John Norum gives us the release of a DVD titled LET IT SHINE (A look inside John Norum's crazy guitar world). It's not exactly an instructional documentary where John focuses on just technical issues, it's actually a trip to the world that surrounds him as a professional and electric guitar master. The recording takes place at the Play Yard studios in Stockholm before the publication of so far the latest album from Europe titled "War of Kings".
John teaches us the studio, where he has recorded some of his records, his second house as he calls it, there surrounded by the equipment that compose it as sound consoles, pedals, amplifiers and other toys show us the main course of the tape that is its nourished assortment of guitars, like the beautiful Gibson Les Paul of 1957 with golden cover, next to the history that behind one of them. Outstanding the memorable 1965 Stratocaster with which he recorded in the 80's the well-known album "The Final Countdown" or the Gibson Flying V of 1978 that belonged to Michael Schenker and that contains his autograph. But certainly the most emotive for John is the guitar of his idolized Gary Moore a 1962 Stratocaster of which he speaks with emotion because of the important meaning it contains for him. And so after the presentation of each guitar John delights us with his mastery characteristic of some wonderful solos of his albums with Europe and others taken from his solo albums. We can hear the punctuation of the wonderful "Heart of Stone", the mythical "Rock the night" and could not miss the universal solo of "The Final Countdown", along with others of more recent songs like the impressive "Devil sings the Blues" of the wonderful album of Europe "Secret Society" (2006), "Riches to rags" or "Last look to the Eden". And in time for nostalgia John remembers songs from his solo albums like the great "Let me love you" album from "Total Control" year 1987 or "Good man shining" from his "Face the Truth" (1992). You have to find it is a very fresh and dynamic video with the advantage that John's comments are translated into Spanish. You do not need to be a musician to like it, if you are a fan of Europe and John, it is imperative for you to have it and if not, you will see a very interesting DVD where a great musician teaches us with emotion his passion for the guitar world.
Also in the video some scene of personal character that gives a touch near taking us to his favorite restaurant and to his record store, next to a nice family greeting in the end. The DVD closes the indispensable false takes and a section with opinions of other musicians who know and have shared the stage and experiences with John where he emphasizes the emotivity of seeing the commentaries of Marcel Jacob bearer that comprised of Europe during a time in the past, disappeared in 2009 and responsible for one of the best songs of the band their fabulous "Scream of Anger", only guitar that also appears on the tape.
Highly recommended, if you want to see everything can be purchased through its official website at this link: www.johnnorum.se/shop/
