So, EUROPE is going to record their next album this autumn. What a great new ,of course !
But this means, too, that the WOK era is nearly finished ! You know what I mean : when there's a new album, Europe is mostly playing the new songs on stage - and that's a normal thing. And therefore songs from the last albums disapear...
Don't know if it's because WOK is my favorite Europe album (with Secret Society), but it seems to me that WOK era has been so short! I like this album so much that I have the feeling it's still a very new one. Pleasure is intact : I'm still discovering many aspects of it, and I'm still amazed like the first day...
In fact, WOK gathers everything I'm expecting in a EUROPE album : -Beautiful and rich melodies. -Excellent and clever lyrics -Pieces of musical virtuosity at every "corner" of a song : guitars, drums and keyboard are soextraordinary ! -Nice cover art, very original. -Awesome and powerful Joey Tempest voice on every song. -A wide variety of styles and tempos, which makes you're never tired.
This album is a masterpiece.
So, I wonder if my pleasure will be so great with the next album. It'll be difficult...

So, EUROPE is going to record their next album this autumn. What a great new ,of course ! But this means, too, that the BOB era is nearly finished ! You know what I mean : when there's a new album, Europe is mostly playing the new songs on stage - and that's a normal thing. And therefore songs from the last albums disapear... Don't know if it's because BOB is my favorite Europe album (with Secret Society), but it seems to me that BOB era has been so short! I like this album so much that I have the feeling it's still a very new one. Pleasure is intact : I'm still discovering many aspects of it, and I'm still amazed like the first day... This album is a masterpiece. So, I wonder if my pleasure will be so great with the next album. It'll be difficult... Frankly speaking Bag of bones is my less favourite album since the reunion. I recognise that it is classy and I respect very much the band for having been able to release such a "difficult" and organic album. But my tastes are very different from yours (I had already noticed that ) and, while I agree that it's musically virtuoso, for me it lacks of straight melodies and lyrically Joey has done much better before and after BOB. Is its era already over? Maybe, but I regret more that from the current setlist are missing songs like Wake up call, Let the children play or Gonna get ready (to name a few) rather than Riches to rags or Drink and a smile.

Oooops OOOppps and OOOPPPsss ! In fact, I was speaking about WAR OF KINGS, the fabulous Europe 10th album. Don't know how I could write "BOB" instead of WOK !!! I feel really stupid... Sorry for the mistake (I had some important personal troubles, recently, and that's maybe the reason why.. !! ) So, ent, I was speaking about WAR OF KINGS, of course : and this is this album that will be dethroned by the next one EUROPE will record at the end of 2016. I have corrected the title of this thread, therefore. Because the fact is that, like you ent, I don't really miss BOB, actually (lyrics were probably among the weakest of Europe. And yes, JTempest voice was not at his top, too.) But at the contrary, WOK is so perfect in many aspects, that when it'll be the end of its era with the next album, I know I will miss it so much ! And that's why I say that the challenge is enormous for EUROPE after such a masterpiece.

OK, War of Kings is something different. I believe that it is a beautiful album that will leave a solid legacy. Traces of it will be found in the setlists for many years. I'm sure that I will always listen with great pleasure to songs like the two singles, but also Second day, California 405 and Nothin' to ya. I'm still not tired of them and probably I won't be for a long time. Is it a challenge to make a good album after such a great album? Well, we're talking about a band that has issued The final countdown after Wings of tomorrow, Out of this world after The final countdown, Secret society after Start from the dark and so on. I'm not worried about that, especially if Europe will be able to keep exploring slightly different paths with every album as they are used to do.

Yes you're right, ent : we are talking about Europe. No doubt they'll be able to amaze and dazzle us again and again ! A few days ago, I spent an evening watching some DVD of Europe : The making-of of WOK, and some parts of the Wacken Open Air show (the WOK songs). What a pleasure indeed ! It was a long time since I didn't watch Europe... And once again, like every time I stay for a while without listening or watching them, I felt so happy. There's something special in the energy they're giving to us : Yes, their music is great, lyrics, performances, are great, too. But the other thing is that they are very positive. Even with sad or raging songs, Europe goes on giving us an energy that is unique and makes us feel good.

Listening to WOK once again. And once agin, I'm flabbergasted by EUROPE virtousity.
This time, I've listened to them just after BACH himself : and the comparison didn't go against them at all !!
They are just genius. And this album is a gem.

I know what you mean by the end of the album era approaching.
There have been some amazing songs come from Europe since the reunion but I struggle to put my finger on one album and say that this is the best collection of songs that Europe have done post reunion.
There were some awesome songs off all the albums, I do think my least 'favourite' or the album I didn't really bother much with was Bag of Bones, EXCEPT the artwork for that album I think has been one of the best ever.
WOK for me has probably had a stronger selection of songs that have stood up well for a longer period that any other album I reckon, I love the vibe WOK has with Vasastan, Angels, and Praise You. Of course the title track is a stand out track that I think will be in the set lists for a while now. The thing is too that the WOK songs hold up live well too, rather than say a track like Always the Pretenders which sounds amazing on CD but live is a little weird.
Sad to see the WOK era come to an end but we should be excited...Europe will be coming off TFC tour so they should be amped with the new tracks to come and hopefully them revisiting TFC vibe might see them bring back some elements that made that era 30 years ago so special, and I don't mean lifting techniques directly from the 80s but maybe just look at some of the things that were cool and seeing if they can fit them in a new modern way.
Just my two cents.
Peace out.

So anyway it occured to me today that their next album could maybe be titled 'Return of Kings'. Keep the king theme going perhaps?
