EUROPE just announced their new project : a Pilsner beer named "Demon Head". Great idea, IMO, even if I'm not a great beer drink and I must confess I'm more a "no-alcohol beer -and melted with water !!! (Yes, I know... some of you must think I'm a kind of monster... ) But every fan needs a good beer ! And a EUROPE beer : that's the best !!

To be honest, I don't share the enthusiasm about the Demon Head pilsner. Why does nearly every rockband sell their own beer or wine these days? I don't get it. And it's getting on my nerves. There are brewers who brew good beer, there are winemakers who make great wine. A rockband is supposed to play great music and that's it in my opinion.

It's a way to invest their money, ... I wish them good luck. I was surprised that they have shared on their official facebook page this news, but is a way to advertise. Hopefully one day we also wake up with an initiative for the fans, ... as well as projects of this type.

I didn't know that every band was doing their own beer. I'm a bit disappointed then, because I thought it was only a EUROPE brilliant idea... I'm joking of course. IMO, it stays a good idea - at least as good as the fact they are selling tshirts or bags... I'm not shoked by the fact they are selling merchandises : many fans are pleased by this. And the ones who don't like it are not forced to buy it, fortunately. In fact, steph, it's probably with this kind of stuff that many rockbands can survive nowadays, you know. being a little involved in music editing (classical music), I can tell you that the world of music CD is very damaged. It's a real disaster actually : very low sales. Some CD distributors have gone bankrupt, and upstream, the music publishers can't sell their production. Not many bands can live only with CD, then. And concerning the shows, I don't think there's very high benefits either. For every concert, don't forget there's the 5 members of EUROPE playing on stage, plus a big crew behind for the lights, sounds, instruments, and a driver. All those people must be paid, feed. And they must rent a room for the gigs : that's very very expensive, believe me !! At the end, I don't think there's a lot of money left for the band. They are not millioners, that's sure ! So, if they sell things like tshirts, bags, photos, and... beer, it can help them to simply survive. And personnaly, I'm ready to play the game and buy this kind of thing even if I don't really need it

Incidentally I work in publishing and know about small margins. And yes, I am all in favor of marketing and business model innovation, as long as it adds to the brand value (and creates revenue), but beer is neither innovative nor a great business model. They're not the brewers after all, all they do is stick their brand on a label. The brewery earns its share as well. So what's in it for the band is not much. Their market is rather small. You're not going to sell large quantities of beer worldwide, especially since it is rather expensive compared to other markets, e.g. Germany. With a die-hard passionate fan base as Europe has (plus they have great customer insights and knowledge about their fans' "wants") they could do better in terms of product and business model innovation. That's what I mean.

not really interested in buying beer... I would definitely prefer some other kind of products; like kick-ass guitar picks for example oh well, oh well...
