Europe rocked the nightFOLKEN: Friday night Europe was on stage at Folken. The vigorous Joey Tempest and the band delivered the goods with a modern Europe twist.
SILJE HENRIKSEN
The band who is current with the album "Bag of Bones" played for approx. 650 spectators. The concert was sold out long before Europe landed in Stavanger. Joey Tempest, who recently turned 49, bears no signs of age. He bounces around on the stage and flirts with the crowd from beginning to end.
Europe punches in with three songs from the new album. Among them "Riches to Rags" and "Bag of Bones". (Stein: "Bag of Bones" was not played) They throw in "Superstitious" in the process before Tempest for the first time addresses the audience.
"Stavanger! Everything alright? Now comes a song from our first album "'Wings Of Tomorrow.'" (Stein: First album?)
"Scream of Anger" fills the venue and the crowd screams.
Drinking and SmilingWhile the crowd is drinking, screaming and enjoying themselves, Tempest with the band at the back strikes with "Carrie". The ballad is well received and the crowd sings along. When the band quiets down and Tempest points the microphone towards the crowd, there's a united choir. Europe stands on stage and smiles while the crowd sings.
"Demon Head", another song from the current album, gets a good response before the band sits down, literally. Europe plays a few songs acoustically, sitting on each of their bar stools, where the first is "Drinking and Smiling." (Stein: Drink and a Smile)
" Do you recognize these three notes?" asks Tempest before playing the intro to "Open Your Heart".
Playing with the crowdBack to playing electric instruments the band mixes old and new songs. "Love is not the enemy," "Girl from Lebanon", "Sign and the times" and "The Beast" arrive one by one. It is only when the drummer starts the intro to "Seven Nation Army" that the atmosphere reaches its absolute peak so far. Everyone joins in, including the singer himself. After the joke has been done Europe slams down with the highly anticipated "Rock The Night".
Throughout the song Tempest plays with the crowd and the crowd plays along. United shouting of rock the night and a little trip into "Seven Nation Army" again, and Europe says thank you and leaves the stage.
Last countdownBut the crowd wants more, and they get more. After almost an hour and a half on stage and two minutes off, the band returns with 'Last Look at Eden ". Although the poodle hair is gone and the 80s style is shelved, Tempest and the band are a great sight on stage. There's not a room or a corner where the vocalist has not been at. He moves all around the stage, with or without a microphone stand. Even if he does not reach the highest notes anymore, he gets the songs to sound good.
The concert ends in the absolute best way with "The Final Countdown".
And so most people could go home and sleep well.
