Apologies if this has been discussed elsewhere already but I couldn't find it mentioned, as it seems we will not be getting an anniversary release, RockCandy records are releasing a remastered OOTW in October; www.rockcandyrecords.com/upcoming (scroll down). They do a good job of their reissues both sound wise and booklet interviews etc so perhaps this might ease the pain of no official anniversary release for some!? Some great stories here (I would hate to have been 4th in line to get the record for my week LOL). I remember OOTW dropped about the same time as New Jersey? Always thought that was poor timing tbh, perhaps OOTW would have fared even better if it hadn't had compete against Bon Jovi, regardless, count me in think it's a great record albeit in desperate need of remastering (and more bottom end) IMO definitely getting myself this RockCandy reissue \m/

I don't think the competition with New Jersey wasn't that much of an issue to be honest. The biggest mistake they made was quitting the Def Leppard tour in '88. John Levén and other members of the band admitted this over the years. The management insisted that they got off the tour and started their own headlining tour across Europe. Bad move because Superstitious did really good in the States. Not in the last place because they were there touring together with one of the biggest bands at that moment. The follow up singles would've done much better if they'd stayed in the States at the time of release. Once they left the tour with Def Leppard their momentum faded pretty quick.

Do you want to celebrate with balloons? Remember: you have to inflate them.

I haven't seen clearly that NEW JERSEY negatively affected EUROPE in the release of OOTW, despite the fact that the press has tried to equate both bands and create (more in the past) a rivalry that was more mediatic than real, I think there have always been 2 very different bands, even in the 80s their music was very different, of course now EUROPE is making a much higher quality music than BON JOVI, but in the past they were very equal, in terms of quality, Although I think they were different.
Maybe they affected the tour with Def Leppard, but in the end I think the problem of this band, great quality in music but poor management, past, and present, its promotion is bad, ... To be a great band, You must show yourself this way, if you go of eternal promise, people will always see you like this.
OOTW is a great album, maybe they would have needed people to project their career from another point of view.
Late for that, and also for the EUROPE of the present, the promotion of their tours is nonexistent ... too well people respond to their concerts ... it's a topic that pisses me off a lot ... that of the band's promotion, that's why I leave it here better.

I got the reissue. The sound is improved for sure and the added comments in the booklet from Nevison, Kee, and Joey is nice to have.
In the booklet, Joey actually addresses the touring with Def Leppard thing in his comments... and he claims that they were only signed on to do that portion of the tour and that there were already other bands lined up, so that the story is a bit urban legend to paraphrase. That said, it could also be a politically correct response 30yrs later too, for what might have been a big misstep in their career.
On a side note beyond OOTW itself.....I agree that some way they needed to stay relevant longer in the US and they didn't. As someone who lives here, if you weren't top of mind, people forgot about you as soon as the single died or the video was off heavy rotation on MTV because there were so many other similar bands, regardless to quality of output. My guess is that it would have made a big difference for them, and then even though music was changing by the time PIP came out, they would not have been such an afterthought, while everyone was going nuts over the Wingers and Warrants. I think that would have allowed them to stay neck and neck longer with the likes of DL and Bon Jovi....
Today, Europe still does exceedingly well worldwide, primarily in Europe where they can headline large festivals and such, but they don't have the popularity levels to consistently tour in the US, without doing small clubs, which at least over here, means a not very profitable tour. That no doubt explains why in all the years since the reunion, they have toured here only twice. I would guess that they have had offers to be part of summer tour packages in the States, but they'd likely be the 3rd tier band on say something like a Def Leppard, Whitesnake, Europe package, and they'd only have 45-50 minutes to play and have to play the hits, which is probably not all that attractive to them since they have so much newer music.

I saw Def Leppard in Dublin a few weeks ago. During the song Hysteria they showed pictures from back in the day on a big video screen. All of a sudden there was Joe Elliot standing wearing a shirt which had the Def Leppard and Europe logo's on the front. It looked like a special event shirt from a gig they did on their tour in '88. I had never seen the shirt before. Cool moment!

I bought this re-issue a while ago (its a nice one!), but only yesterday I discovered a very bad spelling mistake on the back in one of the song titles. Bunch of amateurs really... Can you spot it? Also weird that they picked a photo from TFC era on the back, but okay.
