I asked a fellow fan about this and received this info:
Thomas Erdtman gave them to the band as gifts when The Final Countdown went gold, along with the matching bracelets. The style is called "Byzantine knot", and can still be found easily today. The guys were somewhat superstitious about wearing them at one time, believing they might bring them good fortune.

Thank you so much Stein very interesting ... maybe the necklace was not as mystical and gave them the fortune that they thought, so this is the born of the wonderful "Superstitious" ... " ... I'm not superstitious, I have no doubt, That there's a reason, how things turn out ..."
Who knows ?

I once heard that it was some family member to one of the band members that produced them.... but I don't know which story is true ... Maybe the 2 stories are true : Erdman gave them, but it was made by some family member of Europe members ! Anyway, it was nice : I like the idea that they were wearing something making them like brothers. A kind of "Secret Society", already ... As a symbol, a necklace like this one can mean there's a strong link between them. It reminds me of the jewels worn by the Varangians (Swedish vikings who were living in Byzance).

I was browsing through some old photos today and came across a few articles about Europe.
In one of them, Joey was asked about the necklaces. He replied:"It was the father of one of the crew members on the tour that made these, and he made some for the whole band"

I find interesting.

Hello gemaim, some good memories! LOL Do you remember this Magazine: SUPERPOP? I still have a lot of photos of the band since 80s. I bought it every week, we had always info (not always about music ) and photos, it was perfect for teenager like us at that time I love it

But you know what I remember more funny? All those stories in Nuevo Vale about Europe and Bon Jovi's guys first sexual experiences... so creepy! The one to invent them was really creative.
