I have finally got some time to write a few things about the show at London on Saturday.
Firstly, what an AMAZING show!
I enjoyed all of it, although it did help that I looked at the set list from the earlier shows and knew what to expect. Had I gone and found out on the night they were only playing WOK and TFC then I would have been disappointed. Of course, I knew all of TFC would be played but I was hoping for some tracks from other albums.
I spoke to other people there who did not know songs from the WOK album so they found the first hour a struggle and were hoping for songs they knew from OOTW and PIP. They also felt that the videos were a bit misleading as it showed those album covers on the video screens and they were expecting the songs to reflect Europe over the past 30 years, not just then and now.
The link to the review that Stein posted is a fairly good summary of the concert, although I didn't hear anyone shouting for them to play TFC when they were doing WOK tracks. I am sure though that the atmosphere changed when the video kicked off TFC part of the concert, almost as if this was what people were waiting for.
I am not a huge fan of WOK but enjoyed it live and felt it had a much more powerful sound over the studio recording. The track that stood out for me was Vasastan and of course War Of Kings. This part did seem to go on for a long time and I was counting down the last few tracks towards the end in anticipation of TFC starting. Also, did anyone notice that Joey didn't sing the line 'it doesn't get better than this' during Hole In My Pocket - maybe because we knew it would get better than this?!
The video at the start of TFC really go the crowd excited, and the whole place was buzzing when the song started and I don't think the crowd let up after that. I liked the quick change into TFC and RTN (so used to the extended ending which was at the end of the concert). Great crowd participation during Carrie and when Ian was getting everyone involved with the intro of Cherokee.
A few people here have said the video screens were distracting but I didn't take much notice of those (although I am pretty sure I saw Stefania with her collection during Carrie?).
I'm looking forward to the DVD release to watch it all again. I wonder whether the choice of songs for the concert with two complete albums was in some way planned not only for a DVD/Blu-ray release, but also as a double CD release with WOK live and TFC live on the two discs. If that is the case then I expect I will switch to listening to these instead of the studio albums.
Anyway, great concert and I just wish they had either made it clear beforehand they would be planning both albums. Hopefully there will be a better range of their back catalogue in future concerts (Joey did mention they are unlikely to do the whole album again!)
